EVENT #1

First Aid

 

Challenge:

Each patrol will come across an injured person and be expected to perform first aid on the injured individual. From the Scout hand book, we will be scoring points for the following actions taken by patrol members.

 

1)     Take charge

2)     Stay calm

3)     Act with confidence

4)     Be cheerful

5)     Reassure the victim that everything will be OK.

 

Do First:      a) Identify the problem, get the patient to talk as to explain what happened.

                   b) Since there is blood, put on latex gloves.

c) Treat for shock; provide shade, use the blanket to block the sun. Offer water to the patient, make him comfortable.

d) Apply pressure on the leg wound to slow the bleeding.

e) Clean the wound

f) Bandage the wound with gauze pad and dressing held in places with medical tape or ace bandage.

g) Send two Scouts for help (Buddy System), two Scouts stay with the patient.

 

 

 

EVENT #2 ‘06

Water Boil

 

Challenge:

To build a fire and bring a coffee can ½ full of water to a rolling boil. Liquid Soap drops will be added to the water. When the soap bubbles go over the rim of the can you are done. The quicker you accomplish the event, the higher your point score will be.

 

Each patrol will need to bring: a pocket knife and hand ax.

 

Each patrol will be given: (3) 12” long 2” x 4” of wood

                                          Dryer Lint

                                             Sparker Kit

 

The patrols will need to split the 2 x 4s with their hand ax using the Contact Method and create kindling with their pocket knives. Only Scouts with Totin’ Chips will be allowed to use the hand ax and pocket knives. Only Scouts with Fire ‘N Chits will be allowed to work with the fire.

 

 

EVENT #3 ‘06

Orienteering - Compass Course

 

Challenge:

Each patrol is expected to know how to use a field compass and their pace. They will be asked to pace off 4 compass headings that will cover at least 500 feet and then announce to the judge which stake is their final location.

 

Correct course =  10 pts

Off by 1 stake  =   8 pts.

            2 stakes =  6 pts.

            3 stakes =  4 pts.

            4 stakes =  2 pts.

            5 stakes =  0 pts.

 

There will be three different courses so up to three patrols can be working at the same time.

         

 

 

EVENT # 4 ‘06

Lashings

  

Challenge:

Each patrol will be expected to use the proper lashings to lash three poles together in an A-frame. The lashing must be done correctly per the Scout Handbook. Then raise the A-Frame and 4 scouts must use it to cross the ditch. If the A-Frame does not hold, you must start over.

 

Poles and rope will be supplied.

 

EVENT #5 ‘06

String Burn

 

Challenge:

To build a fire and burn through the string, set at 20” high. The quicker you accomplish the event, the higher your point score will be.

 

Each patrol will need to bring: a pocket knife and hand ax.

 

Each patrol will be given: (3) 12” long 2” x 4” of wood

                                          (2) Matches

 

Each extra match requested will cost the patrol 30 extra seconds.

 

NO FIRE STARTERS, DRYER LINT or any other fire assisting starters will be allowed.

 

The patrols will need to split the 2 x 4s with their hand ax using the Contact Method and create kindling with their pocket knives. Only Scouts with Totin’ Chips will be allowed to use the hand ax and pocket knives. Only Scouts with Fire ‘N Chits will be allowed to work with the fire.

                  

EVENT #6 ‘06

Knots

 

Challenge:

Each patrol will need to tie the following basic knots, your score will depend on how quickly you can ties these knots.

 

1)     Tie a Bowline around a tree, the other end will connect to another piece of rope using a Sheet Bend. The other end of rope #2 is tied to rope #3 using a Square Knot. The other end of rope #3 is tied to a tree using a Clove Hitch. Start with the thick rope, end up with the two thinner ropes.

2)     Using 2-Half Hitches, tied around a tree, the other end go around a stake in the ground and tied off with a Taught Line Hitch.
