Black Creek Merit Badge Fair 2008

Local Merit Badge Fair Attracts South Carolina and Georgia
Scouts
Contributed by Steven Jimenez
Black Creek District’s 13th
Annual Merit Badge Fair for Boy Scouts has become very popular for local
Scouts, but this year’s event attracted one Scout from Lexington, SC and
another from Fayetteville, GA.
Phil Lancaster, this year’s Merit Badge
Fair Chairman, sums it up as Clay County Scouts offers Merit Badges that the
boys need. Suzy Cochran, also a staff member, added that Reptile Study was a
merit badge not offered previously.
Apparently, 380 Boy Scouts agree, along
with the 90 adult Scouters that descended upon Camp Echockotee on Doctors
Lake Drive in Orange Park the weekend of
March 14th to 16th.
Keith Cooper, father of Evan Cooper of
Lexington, SC, drove the 260 mile drive due to the Family Life Merit Badge
not having a Merit Badge Counselor in Lexington to assist Evan in earning
the merit badge back home. Keith and Evan arrived Friday evening and was
hosted by Troop 232, chartered by Oakleaf Christian Fellowship in Argyle. In
summarizing the trip to Orange Park, Keith Cooper said “Evan made some
friends, had a fun weekend and will be heading home tired”.
A good time was had by all, but the
biggest lesson learned was to help one another. The Scout Motto, “Do A Good
Turn Daily” was applied, so let all of us pass this on to one another.
